The Gulf of Mexico is one of the most diverse dive destinations in the world. The Gulf Coast of Florida may have the best rated beaches in the world but just offshore it gets better!
During the late Pleistocene Era the coastline of Florida extended out beyond what is now known as the "Middle grounds" over 100 miles beyond today's coastline. Glacial melt that occurred between 30,000 and 5,000 years ago submerged a diverse landscape that today is represented by limestone ledges, hard bottom, and areas of mixed rock and sand that are amazing to explore with SCUBA gear!
In areas where the natural limestone features have eroded or been covered by centuries of sediment and sand Pasco County has added Artificial reefs that consists of TONS of concrete, old bridges, barges, ARMY TANKS, and ships sank to provide habitat gulf fish and a sportsman's paradise ALL of these reef site are accessible to recreational SCUBA divers.
